The Ample Traveler© has set up stakes for a while in the greater Phoenix area. Don't worry, we'll be back on the road soon enough. It is just that winter limits traveling somewhat and, well, we are just plain enjoying ourselves around these parts.
We spent the month of November in Tempe, AZ, close enough to Sun Devil Stadium to have the RV rock a bit from the fireworks set off when the Cardinals score (which, fortunately, meant not often). We have found a lovely coffee shop called Into the Bean in Mesa (the next town over from Tempe). The owner and barrista, Luis, is a kindred spirit, following his dream. His free wi-fi as well as his great coffee has enriched our lives greatly.
November marks the first anniversary of the 39th birthday of one-third of The Ample Traveler©, Carl "yes, I'm really 39" Wilkerson. We had a great time celebrating.
The day began with breakfast at IHOP, of course. Followed by a present party at Into the Bean. Then we met our comedy buddies, Keith Curtis and Larry Kenny at Jillian's, where we ate and played for several hours.
The Ample Traveler© was impressed with the accessibility of the place, with moveable chairs, elevators to the different floors and roomy floor space allowing for easy mobility. But the day was about fun, not work, and we didn't subject Jillian's to our usual rigorous investigation.
Virtual bowling, computer arcade games and good old fashion pinball machines made the day.
The day ended with Carl, Keith and Steve heading out to karaoke at Alley Cats in Graham Central Station in Tempe. They were essentially the only customers, so they had the stage most of the night. It will probably be a night that the crew from Alley Cats will remember for a while. Our boys took on everything from the "Theme from F-Troop" to "Sweet Home Chicago."
Said Carl at the end of the day, "I thought that went very nicely."
