Oscar's Cafe "Are you sure we're allowed to sit on the furniture?"
Oscar's Cafe on the corner of South Marion Road and West 26th Street in Sioux Falls is a beautiful cafe in a little strip mall. It seems a bit unassuming until you get inside. "Opulent" is the word that comes to mind. It doesn't hurt that the pastries are excellent and there is free wireless computer connection as well.
One of the barriers to accessibility we found throughout South Dakota was the need for snow doors. These doubledoor arrangements allow for entry into a small foyer that allows a door to the outside to close before the door to the inside is opened. This keeps the bitterly cold weather outside and lowers energy bills by keeping the warmth inside.
Unfortunately it also makes entry difficult with any kind of assistive device, including guide dogs. Getting into Oscar's Cafe might be a bit difficult and require some assistance.
Once inside, however, you will find a very userfriendly space. Variable seating accommodates a wide variety of people. The universal restrooms allow for almost everyone's needs. The smokefree atmosphere allows for a full appreciation of the pastries and baked goods as they are being made. The aroma in the place is almost intoxicating.
The warmth of the atmosphere is generated from more than hot buns. The staff are incredibly friendly.
Oh yeah, and be sure to check out the decorated glass display. Collecting glass and living in an RV don't mix well. Otherwise, The Ample Traveler© would have been tempted.
