Life in the "Unit"

September 2004

Living in a motor home, particularly one that moves on a regular basis, is about two things: space and motion.  Space is at a premium, especially with three adult people and a cat living in a 35-foot RV. On rainy days, The Ample Traveler© suspects that we know what it is like to live in a submarine.  Yelling "make a hole" is necessary at times to make it from the front to the back of the unit.  "Making a hole" is often a difficult maneuver.

The Ample Traveler© has the added burden of accommodating a fully operational multimedia workplace, including electric keyboard, three computers, two printers, sound equipment and digital photographic and video equipment. We needed to build a media station that not only was large enough to accommodate the equipment, but could do so in such a way as to protect that equipment when the vehicle was in motion.

So if you were wondering what else we did while hanging out in mostly mid-Missouri and why, after six weeks we didn't get a chance to visit more things, well, carpentry was a big part of our summer.

The great design from Steve and the hard work of all of us paid off.  The Ample Traveler© has become a fully functional multimedia mobile unit.  We, of course, have plans for improvements and expansions.  Stay tuned for the adventure on the road.

Steve not only put in the manual labor for cutting boards and painting shelves, he designed the build-out that converted our dining area into a multimedia work station.

Pattie helps out with painting.  This is one of the few activities where she pretty much does what she is told without argument.  It is a rare sight.

The finished multimedia work station has room for books and an electronic keyboard that easily inputs Carl's compositions directly into the laptop computer. Keyboard to keyboard service, you might say
The station is u-shaped, with ample room for two printers (located under the desktops).  As you can see, it didn't take long for the work station to fill up, looking like every other office space of busy creative people.
Carl is quite pleased with the results.
