W. g. GrindersOn the corner of Ninth Street and Walnut in downtown Columbia The Ample Traveler© had the best hot subs and cheesecake we have found so far. W. g. Grinders isn't really a local business, but the chain can be found mostly in midwestern college towns. The prices are low enough for a college budget and the food is big enough to satisfy.
Several features of the downtown Columbia restaurant recommend it. First, there is
an easily accessible door for wheelchair and walker traffic.
The Ample Traveler©
prefers universal access where everyone can enter the same door, but
the ease of the ramp and entrance keeps the restaurant on the list.
Inside, the tables and chairs are easy to move around and reconfigure to
accommodate diversity.
The bathrooms are universally accessible with no obstacles in the path, making a
comfortable entrance for wheelchair users and larger customers. The restaurant
is smoke-free, allowing for breathable air for everyone and ensuring that you
can catch a whiff of those great sandwiches.
During our stay in Columbia, W.g. Grinders
added Gelatos (Italian ices) to their fare.
The Ample Traveler© found them
yummy enough and priced right as well. They make a lighter dessert than
cheesecake, which means that you might have room for dessert after all.
The Ample Traveler© will definitely be looking for other W. g. Grinders along the road.
